Go Broncs!!

The University of Texas-Pan American is located in the Rio Grande Valley. The main campus of the University is in Edinburg, Texas, population approximately 34,000. Six miles to the southwest is McAllen, Texas; just south of McAllen, is Reynosa, Mexico, a city of one million. UTPA is also located about 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and the resort area of South Padre Island. The Rio Grande Valley is distinctly bicultural, and many people speak both English and Spanish. So how does the University of Texas-Pan American appeal to those who already live in the valley? "UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state and the fifth largest in the UT System. The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education lists UTPA among its top 100 best U.S. colleges for Hispanics. UTPA offers 54 bachelor’s degree programs, 50 master’s, 2 doctoral, and one cooperative doctoral pharmacy program. UTPA educates the most Mexican-American students in the nation."

UTPA is a good school and most of the people in my high school graduating class are attending PanAm.  Because it is so close to where they live many students see that as an advantage to going to school there.  There are dormitories on the UTPA campus but most students to not live on campus, and usually just live at home because the University is so close so this beats the cost of room & board (especially if you live with mommy and/or daddy).  Many students in high school can enter the University Scholars program which requires students to take some classes at UTPA while in high school, earn a B or better in those classes, and score a certain score on the TASP and they can get the University Scholars scholarship which is basically 4 years paid tuition at UTPA.  This is an extraordinary scholarship and does contribute to many individuals attending at college for free instead of going somewhere else and taking out loans.  There is also a sense of school spirit at this University and is much like that of high school and I believe gives new students that sense of nostalgia.
